What is regards, marcel?

A monthly newsletter that’s a little about Marcel Proust and a lot about our culture at large, written—as much of my writing is—somewhere in the space between memoir and lit crit.

My beats: the confessional and auto/fictional modes, desire, gender, weird women artists (and how our work becomes mediated by or assimilated into the cultural mainstream), narratives of trauma, etc. This dispatch—on the Proust joke in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie—feels like a pretty emblematic essay from the project thus far.

I launched regards, marcel in February 2023 as a way of holding myself to the task of reading Proust’s À le recherche du temps perdu in two years. We’re currently on Volume IV: Sodom and Gomorrah! Feel free to join us :) We’re using the Moncrieff editions.

  • April: Part One

  • May: Part Two: Chapter One

  • June: Part Two: Chapter Two

  • July: Part Two: Chapters Three and Four

For paid subscribers: about every month or every other I’ll have guest features and conversations with writers, friends, and other loved ones. Objects of Affection is an occasional series in which I talk with fellow writers about the cultural objects that are currently revving us up. Honored Guests will showcase full essays by friends of “the” “pod.” Possibly opening up to pitches in 2024. xo!

Why subscribe?

To support a stunningly beautiful angel woman’s work, is the main reason…

Do I have to read Proust to be here?

Not at all! But I think it would be very sexy if you did…
